The chilling CCTV photographs that were revealed today show a man with shaggy hair and glasses named Robert Hawkins taking aim at holiday shoppers. The note that Hawkins left behind before committing suicide is written in a handwritten style and expresses compassion for his friends but only hatred for his victims. In his letter, he stated, “I am aware that everyone will remember me as some kind of monster; however, I would like for you to comprehend that I simply do not wish to be a burden on the people whom I care for throughout my entire life.
I just want to take a few pieces of your (expletive) with me,” the speaker said. After leaving the note at the suburban home where he lived on Wednesday, the 19-year-old gunman went to the Westroads Mall in Omaha with an AK-47 and opened fire on the gathering of people shopping for the holidays during the midday hours. He killed eight people at the Von Maur store before turning the rifle on himself.
In the beginning of the assault, Hawkins was seen strolling into the shopping centre without any weapons, wearing spectacles, and wearing a black zippered sweatshirt over a black T-shirt with a white logo. This was captured on surveillance camera and in still photographs. The camera has timestamps that indicate that he returned to the business six minutes after the initial time stamp. After entering the decorated store, Hawkins can be seen on video entering the south entrance of the department store and immediately proceeding to the lift that is located to his right.
A weapon that the authorities identified as an AK-47 assault rifle was concealed by his right hand, which was pressed tightly against his stomach. People were seen fleeing the business, and the first police officer to arrive at the incident was seen walking in with his revolver drawn. Other footage that was published proved this. However, the police did release a still image from the tape that showed Hawkins with his sleeves pulled up and aiming the AK-47 to fire in front of a store mannequin. The video of the incident was not provided by the police.
